Common Refrigerator Problems We Fix

Running but not coolingUsually a dusty condenser coil or an evaporator fan that has stopped.

If the compressor hums but the fresh-food side creeps above 40°F, airflow is the first suspect. A condenser coil packed with dust or an evaporator fan that has stopped turning are the usual causes. A failed start relay or a sealed-system leak is less common, but possible.

Ice maker stopped making iceOften the water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or the ice maker module.

Check that the shutoff arm isn't raised and the freezer is at 0°F. If both are fine, look at the water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or the ice maker module itself.

Water on the floor or under the crisper drawersA cracked drain pan, a split supply line or a clogged defrost drain.

Water under the fridge often comes from a cracked drain pan or a split supply line. Water pooling inside, under the crispers, usually means the defrost drain is clogged and meltwater is running the wrong way.

Frost building up on the freezer's back wallThe defrost heater, thermostat or control, or a torn door gasket.

A thick layer of frost on the back panel points to the defrost system: a heater, thermostat or control that no longer runs the cycle. A torn door gasket lets humid air in and causes the same thing.

Clicking, buzzing or a loud fan

A click every few minutes often means the compressor is trying to start and the relay or overload is cutting it out. Grinding or chirping usually comes from an evaporator or condenser fan motor.

Water dispenser not working

A frozen water line in the door, a failed dispenser switch or a clogged filter. If the filter is past due, replace it first. It's the cheapest thing to rule out.

Refrigerator Repair Questions

Should I unplug my refrigerator if it's not cooling?

Not unless you smell burning or the breaker keeps tripping. Leave it running with the doors closed. Food stays cold longer that way, and the technician can see what the system is doing while it has power.

How long is food safe after a refrigerator stops cooling?

USDA guidance is that an unopened refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours. Throw out perishable food that has been above 40°F for 2 hours or more. An appliance thermometer takes the guesswork out of it.

Do you work on built-in refrigerators like Sub-Zero?

Yes. Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking built-ins are on the list of brands we service. Mention the model when you get in touch so we know what we're working on.

Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?

It depends on what failed. Fan motors, defrost parts and water valves are modest repairs on almost any fridge. A sealed-system repair on an older, low-cost unit is a harder call. Once the cause is known, you can weigh the repair against the age and value of the unit.
