Common Oven and Range Problems We Fix

Oven won't heat to temperatureA weak bake igniter on gas ovens; the bake element or sensor on electric.

On a gas oven, a weak bake igniter is the most common cause. It glows, but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. On an electric oven, look at the bake element and the temperature sensor.

Food burns on the bottom, raw on topA dead broil element or convection fan, or a sensor out of calibration.

A dead broil element or convection fan pushes all the heat to the bottom. A sensor that's out of calibration can also run the oven 25 degrees or more off what the display says.

Burner won't light, or keeps clickingMoisture from a boil-over, a cracked igniter or the spark module.

Clicking after the flame lights usually means moisture from a boil-over or a cracked igniter. No spark at all points to the spark module or a burner switch.

Door stays locked after self-cleanThe latch motor or lock switch has failed. Don't force the door.

The latch motor or lock switch has failed, or the control has lost track of where the lock is. Don't force the door. The latch is easy to damage further.

Blank display, beeping or error codes

A control board, a worn keypad, or heat damage after a self-clean cycle. Note any code on the display before you call.

Oven and Range Repair Questions

I smell gas near my range. What should I do?

Leave the house. Don't use light switches, the range or your phone inside. Once you're outside, call your gas utility's emergency line or 911. Call us once the gas utility has made it safe.

Is it worth fixing an oven that won't heat?

Usually. Igniters, elements and temperature sensors are common, replaceable parts. On older models, the harder question is the control board, where parts can be difficult to find.

Should I keep using my oven's self-clean cycle?

Self-clean runs extremely hot and is a common trigger for control board and door lock failures, especially on older ovens. Plenty of owners clean by hand instead.

Do you work on dual-fuel ranges?

Yes. A dual-fuel range pairs a gas cooktop with an electric oven, so both the gas and electric sides get checked when something goes wrong.
