Common Freezer Problems We Fix
Food is soft but not thawedA weak start component, a dirty condenser or a door that won't seal.
A freezer should hold 0°F. Ice cream that's soft and meat that gives a little point to a weak start component, a dirty condenser or a door that isn't sealing all the way.
Runs constantly and never cycles offDust on the condenser, a failing fan, low refrigerant or a hot garage.
Something is making it work too hard: dust on the condenser, a failing fan, low refrigerant, or a garage that is hotter than the unit was designed for.
Thick ice around the lid of a chest freezerUsually a worn lid gasket or a lid that isn't closing flat.
Chest freezers are manual-defrost, so some frost is normal. A heavy band of ice near the top usually means the lid gasket is worn or the lid isn't closing flat.
Upright freezer iced over at the backA failed defrost heater, defrost timer or defrost thermostat.
Frost-free uprights melt their own frost with a defrost heater on a timer or control. When the heater, timer or defrost thermostat fails, the coil ices over and cold air stops moving.
No light, no hum, not running at all
Check the outlet and the breaker, and any GFCI outlet in the garage, which can trip without anyone noticing. If power is reaching it, the thermostat, start relay or compressor is next.
High-temperature alarm or error code
Built-in columns from Sub-Zero and Thermador show alarms and codes when something is off. Write down the code before you call. It narrows the cause considerably.
Freezer Repair Questions
Will a freezer work in a San Antonio garage?
Every freezer is built for a range of room temperatures, and a closed garage in July can run past it. When that happens the unit struggles or stops cycling properly. Some models are rated for garage use. The manual or the rating plate lists the range for yours.
How long will food stay frozen if my freezer stopped?
With the door closed, USDA guidance is about 48 hours for a full freezer and about 24 hours for one that's half full. Food that still has ice crystals or reads 40°F or below can be refrozen.
Is frost in my chest freezer a problem?
A thin layer is normal. Once it's about a quarter inch thick, defrost it. Frost that comes back quickly after defrosting points to an air leak at the lid.
Do you repair built-in freezer columns?
Yes, including columns from Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking.
