Runs but doesn't heat?

Microwave Repair in San Antonio, TX.

Over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves get used every day and tend to fail in a few predictable ways. We repair them in homes across San Antonio. An over-the-range unit is also the vent hood for your cooktop, so its fan and light get checked too.

Common Microwave Problems We Fix

Runs but doesn't heatUsually the magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. Not a DIY job.

The turntable spins and the light is on, but food stays cold. The magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor has usually failed. These parts hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.

Sparks inside the cavityMetal inside, or a burned waveguide cover on the side wall.

Metal is the usual cause: twist ties, foil, or plates with metallic trim. With nothing metal inside, look at the waveguide cover, the small panel on the side wall. A burned cover needs replacing before the microwave is used again.

Turntable won't turnA loose roller ring or coupler, or a failed turntable motor.

Check that the roller ring and coupler are seated. If they are, the turntable motor under the floor has likely failed.

Keypad doesn't respond or it won't startA worn keypad or a faulty door switch.

A worn membrane keypad, or one of the door switches that tell the control the door is shut. If it stopped right after a slam, suspect the switches.

Vent fan or cooktop light not working

On over-the-range models, the fan motor, light socket or the control behind them. A fan that runs on its own is usually the heat sensor doing its job.

Microwave drawer won't open or close

Drawer models use a small motor and gear track. A jammed track, a stripped gear or a failed drawer motor are the common faults.

Microwave Repair Questions

Is it safe to open a microwave and fix it myself?

No. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the unit is unplugged. The turntable and roller ring are fine to check yourself. Anything behind the outer case is not.

My microwave sparked once. Can I keep using it?

If it was a stray fork, remove it and carry on. If it sparks with nothing metal inside, stop using it. A burned waveguide cover or chipped cavity paint can lead to bigger damage.

Why does my over-the-range microwave fan turn on by itself?

Most over-the-range models have a heat sensor that switches the fan on when the cooktop below gets hot, to protect the electronics. If it runs with the cooktop off and cool, the sensor or control may have failed.
