Common Cooktop Problems We Fix
Gas burner won't igniteA burner cap that isn't seated, blocked ports or a cracked igniter.
A burner cap that isn't seated, ports blocked by food, or a cracked igniter. If none of the burners spark, the spark module is the likely cause.
Weak, yellow or uneven flameClogged burner ports or a misaligned cap, sometimes the valve or regulator.
Clogged burner ports or a misaligned cap. Lift the cap, clear the ports with a pin, and let it dry fully. If the flame stays low, the valve or pressure regulator needs a look.
One radiant zone won't heatThe element, a burned terminal or the switch that controls it.
On a smooth-top, one dead zone usually means the element itself, a burned terminal, or the switch that controls it.
Induction zone shows an error or won't detect the panCheck the pan is magnetic. If it is, a fan, sensor or power board.
First check the pan: a fridge magnet should stick firmly to the bottom. If it does and the zone still won't start, a cooling fan, sensor or power board may have failed.
Element stuck on high
An electric coil or radiant zone that only runs at full heat almost always means its infinite switch has failed closed.
Cracked glass top
Stop using it and turn it off at the breaker. The glass is usually available as a replacement part.
Cooktop Repair Questions
Why won't my gas burner stop clicking?
Moisture from a boil-over is the usual cause. Remove the cap, let everything dry for a few hours, then try again. If it keeps clicking, the burner switch or spark module needs attention.
Is a cracked glass cooktop safe to use?
No. Turn it off at the breaker and leave it off until the glass has been replaced.
Why does my induction cooktop buzz?
A light hum is normal at high power, especially with layered pans. A loud rattle, or a fan that keeps running long after you've finished cooking, can point to a failing fan.
Do you repair rangetops?
Yes. A rangetop is a cooktop with controls on the front, common on Wolf, Thermador and Viking kitchens.
