Ice Maker Not Making Ice?
When an ice maker stops, the cause is often simple: it has been switched off, the water is not reaching it, or the freezer is not cold enough. Work through these checks in order.
Check That It Is On
Most ice makers have a wire shutoff arm or a switch. If the arm is raised, or the switch is off, it will not make ice. Door-mounted ice makers on French-door refrigerators often have an on and off setting on the control panel instead.
Check the Freezer Temperature
Ice makers need the freezer at about 0°F to cycle. If the freezer is running warmer, fix that first: see our guide to a refrigerator that is not cooling.
Check the Water Supply and Filter
Make sure the water valve behind the refrigerator is open and the supply line is not kinked behind the unit. A clogged water filter slows the flow until the ice maker gets too little water to make full cubes. If the filter is past its replacement date, change it first; it is the cheapest thing to rule out. Hard water, common across the San Antonio area, can clog filters and the inlet valve screen sooner.
A Frozen Fill Tube or Failed Part
If water reaches the refrigerator but not the ice maker, the fill tube may be frozen, often because the freezer runs too cold or the water pressure is low. A failed water inlet valve or ice maker module is also common. Door ice makers on some French-door models are known to build up ice in the compartment, which jams the ice maker.
Call if the arm is down, the freezer is at 0°F, the water is on and the filter is new, and there is still no ice. Have the brand and model number ready.
Questions
Why are my ice cubes small or hollow?
Usually low water flow: a clogged filter, low household pressure or a partly blocked inlet valve.
Why does my ice taste or smell bad?
Old ice absorbs odors from the freezer. Throw it out, change the water filter and run a few batches before judging the taste.
