Gas Burner Clicking or Won't Light?

Gas cooktop and range burners light with a spark from an igniter next to the burner. Clicking without a flame, or clicking that will not stop, is usually caused by moisture, food debris or a burner cap that is out of place.

Seat the Burner Cap

Each burner has a cap that must sit flat and centered on the burner head. If it is tilted or shifted, the gas does not reach the igniter evenly. Lift it off, wipe it, and set it back so it sits level.

Dry and Clean the Burner

Spills and cleaning water are the most common cause. A wet igniter or burner can click for hours. Remove the cap and grate, wipe up moisture, and let everything dry fully, or leave the burners off for a day. Clear the burner ports with a pin or toothpick; do not enlarge them.

Clicking That Won't Stop

If one burner keeps clicking with the knob off, moisture under the control knob or a failing spark switch is likely. If all burners click at once, the spark module may be failing. These need a technician.

Safety

If you smell gas with all burners off, do not light anything or use switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility. Never try to light a burner that has been releasing gas for more than a few seconds without lighting; turn it off and let the gas clear.

Questions

Can I light a gas burner with a match?

On many cooktops you can, carefully, during a power outage. Check the manual first, and never if you smell gas.

Why is my burner flame yellow?

A mostly yellow or uneven flame usually means the burner ports are partly blocked or the cap is not seated. Clean and reseat it. If it stays yellow, have it checked.
