Microwave Runs But Doesn't Heat?
When a microwave lights up, the turntable turns and the fan runs but the food stays cold, the high-voltage part of the oven has stopped working. This repair is not a do-it-yourself job.
Why You Should Not Open It
A microwave's high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the oven is unplugged. Do not remove the cabinet or try to test parts inside it.
Simple Checks First
Test with a cup of water for one minute on full power. If the water is only lukewarm, try another outlet on a different circuit. If the microwave sometimes heats and sometimes does not, note when it happens; it helps the diagnosis.
What Usually Fails
The common causes are a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or door switch. Door switches also stop the oven from running at all. A technician checks these safely with the power discharged.
Repair or Replace?
Built-in and over-the-range microwaves are usually worth repairing, because replacing them often means fitting a new trim kit or matching a vent. A small countertop microwave is often cheaper to replace. Have the brand and model number ready; it is usually on a label inside the door frame.
Questions
Is a microwave that sparks safe to use?
No. Stop using it. Sparking can come from metal in the oven, a damaged waveguide cover or a failing part.
Why does my over-the-range microwave's fan run on its own?
Many over-the-range models switch the vent fan on automatically when the cooktop below gets hot. It turns off when things cool down.
