Dishwasher Not Draining?

Clean the Filter

Most dishwashers made in the last decade have a manual filter under the lower spray arm. Twist it out, rinse it under the tap and scrub off food and grease with a soft brush. A clogged filter is the most common cause of slow draining and dirty dishes.

Check the Garbage Disposal and Drain Hose

If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, run the disposal first; a clog there blocks the dishwasher too. On a new disposal, the knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet may never have been removed. Under the sink, make sure the drain hose is not kinked or crushed behind the cabinet.

Signs of a Pump or Control Problem

If the filter is clean and the disposal runs freely but water still stays, the drain pump may be jammed or failed. A humming sound with no draining often points to a jammed pump. Many dishwashers show a drain error code on the display. Write it down: it helps a technician bring the right part.

When to Call

Call if water stays after the checks above, if you see water under the dishwasher, or if a drain error code keeps returning. Have the brand and model number ready; it is usually on the edge of the door or the side of the tub.
